How We Chose the Top Baby Bassinets in Our List
As you go through our list of the top 10 bassinets, you might ask yourself how exactly we determine what the best bassinet on the market is? When we looked at the options out there and started to compile our list, we wanted to make sure that the choices we recommended met our criteria. By doing this, we could then recommend these to you, knowing that our selections would be the perfect fit for you. Here are the things we looked at to build our list:
As with any piece of baby furniture that you will buy for your baby, you want to make sure that it is well put together so that they can be safe each time they use it. You will want to look for ones with a wide and supportive base. If the bassinet features foldable legs or wheels, you want to make sure that they lock away securely when not in use.
This is likely to be your little one’s first bed. Having a bassinet that is durable is important because when your baby is asleep at night, you may want them right next to you when you fall asleep. However, during the day, you’re going to want to move it around the house. You don’t want your little one to be sleeping at night when a wheel suddenly breaks off their bassinet when you try to move it closer to you. Don’t put yourself in that situation.
Quality vs Budget
The eternal struggle. When you are either planning for a baby or have just had a baby, the determination between quality vs budget. You definitely don’t want to sacrifice quality, but at the same time, you don’t want to destroy your budget that keeps you from buying other essentials, like diapers. Finding a good balance is key. The recommendations that we have made balance both sides of the line.
When you’re planning for a baby, money is everything and depending on the product, it could decide whether you buy it or not. We tried to find choices that gave you the most benefit for the money spent. Being able to buy something once is a very valuable piece of mind.
Baby Crib Benefits
Owning a bassinet for your little one to sleep in when they come home from the hospital can have many benefits not only for your little one obviously but for you as well. While some may be apparent, some may be ones you may not have thought off.
Keeping Baby Nearby
When your baby first comes home, you will feel like there is nothing in the world that can protect them better than you. And you aren’t wrong. In your arms is likely the safest place they can be. However, when it does comes time to have your little one to go to sleep, using a bassinet can help keep them close all night long.
Not everyone has an unlimited amount of room in their home. If this is the case for you, a bassinet can be a great choice as a bed for your little one. Bassinets and cradles can be much smaller and more compact than baby cribs or other day beds. With their smaller size, moving a bassinet around, whether it be to another room for use or out of the way when not in use is much easier that trying to do so with a crib.
As with any piece of furniture for your little one, their safety is at the forefront of your concerns. Bassinets can offer many safety features to keep your little one safe each time they use it. A bassinets’ portability makes it a safe option because you can move it around the house to help keep on an eye on your child while you take care of other things around the house.
Bassinets are designed with smaller children in mind. Because of this, many cradles will come with specially padded sides and other features that can be infant-specific.
If you have a baby or have one on the way, then you know that babies can be expensive. Because of this, parents might not buy every piece of furniture or baby gear right away. Buying a bassinet as the first bed for your child, in lieu of a crib, can save money. Be sure to compare the weight and age limits for the bassinets you are considering in order to get the best results out of the one you choose.
While for some parents, the way the bassinet looks may not be a deciding factor in which one they decide to purchase, many parents may choose a bassinet that fits in with their babies’ nursery or personal preference
How safe are bassinets for your baby?
Many parents who are in the market for a bassinet to give their little one a place to sleep will wonder what is the best way to keep my baby safe and sound while sleeping in a bassinet?
Research shows that there are more and more families turning to bassinets as a place for their baby to sleep, although not very much is known about how safe they are.
Jodi Pike, MD and Rachel Moon, MD from the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. looked into the data surrounding the death of 53 infants that involved the use of a bassinet.
While admitting that the data is limited, the researchers reviewed all of the infant deaths involving bassinets that were reported to the Consumer Product Safety Commision (CPSC) between 1990 and 2004. The results of their study are as follows:
- 85% of deaths were caused by suffocation, or a lack of oxygen
- 74% of the bassinets had blankets, pillows or plastic bags in them
- 37% of babies were placed face-down when they went to sleep
- 50 % of babies were discovered face down in the bassinet.
- 9% of the deaths were the result of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)
- 9 infants died due to mechanical problems with the bassinet or they were not being used properly
Researchers stressed the importance of following guidelines established by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) for putting your baby to sleep
- Lay your child on their back when they are put to sleep
- Avoid having items such as soft bedding, loose pillows or stuffed animals around their sleeping area.
The researchers, after their results were released stated, “If parents plan to use a bassinet, they should make sure that it is in good repair and conforms to CPSC guidelines.”
We didn’t want to dissuade you from purchasing a bassinet for your little one. We wanted to inform you on any benefit or risk that could come with one.

Much like a portable bassinet, travel bassinets are designed to be moved around. The difference is that with a travel bassinet, you can use it just about anywhere you are. These will typically break down into a manageable and compact size so that they can be put into your backseat or trunk when you take a trip. A travel bassinet has a specific use and really isn’t built for daily use in your home.
